Two big mistakes beginners make when playing roulette

It’s no surprise that roulette is one of the most popular games in a casino, online or off. It’s a very simple game which simply asks you to place a bet and then watch how the game unfolds. You don’t have to try and second-guess another player’s intentions, or evaluate a face-up card – it’s just a matter of picking a bet and watching the wheel. It makes for a very straightforward casino experience, which allows you to have fun.

Nonetheless, there is a difference between a game being simple and it being impossible to make mistakes when playing it. There is a wrong way to play roulette; in fact, there are several. The following are a couple of ways that you can end up walking away from the roulette table under a cloud…

Assuming that a certain result is “due”

Each time that roulette wheel spins, there is a 1 in 37, or 1 in 38 chance of it landing on any one of the numbers on it. If it landed on 5 last time out and hasn’t landed on 12 in forever, that doesn’t change the probabilities at all. It might be another while before it lands on 12, and it might land on 5 again, and each of those results is as likely as the other.

People get confused about probability because over time, a wheel should land on 12 as often as it lands on 5 – but that probability is spread over forever, and you’re at the table for a much shorter time than that. No result is ever “due”.

Thinking you won’t lose out by just playing red or black

You could play every casino in the world, starting by working your way down this popular online casino list, and only ever bet on red, or only bet on black. You may imagine that means you’d break even over time. The truth is, you won’t. All it takes is for the ball to land on green once, and that plan goes up in smoke.

The truth is, about 48 times out of 100, the ball will land on red. The same goes for black. Keen mathematicians will realize that means you’re down on the deal because on average, you’ll lose four more spins than you win. At times luck will turn for and against you, and your smartest play is to walk away while luck is in your corner.

Roulette is a fun game, but you should never imagine that you can outwit the roulette wheel with one clever trick. At the end of the day, you’re never going to outwit math. All you can do is walk away when it’s in your favor.
